WELCOME to my Vowles family web
site. I have been researching family history now for a number of years.
I was born in Worthing, West Sussex, England. in 1946. My mother
Kathleen Vowles was unmarried so I carried on the Vowles name. She was
born in Brighton, East Sussex, England in 1906. Her father being Henry
Richard Vowles born in London in 1861. His wife was Alice Vowles nee
Vaughan born in Chilham, Kent, England in 1873. Henry Richard Vowles
father was Edward Vowles born in Clifton, Bristol. His father Edward
Vowles was also born in Clifton, Bristol, but I don't know where his
father Thomas Vowles was born although he was married in Clifton in
1805.
If you think that you are related, please make contact. I would love to
hear from you. Even if you are not related I hope you enjoy the site. |

HENRY RICHARD VOWLES
(BLIND HARRY)
My grandfather
HENRY RICHARD Vowles was born in January 1861
in St. Saviour, London, he became totally blind at 3 weeks old and was put
into a home for the blind to live. He was taught to play a number of musical
instruments, but his main asset was his fine tenor voice. Harry moved to
Brighton in 1882. To earn his living he sang in the big houses around
Brighton, and entertained in local hotels including The Ship Hotel. He was
a regular performer in the music halls and had a pitch on the Brighton/Hove
border where the Angel of Peace statue now stands. Henry died February
1919.
